Want to experience your city from a different perspective?..........

Ride a bicycle!

Besides being FUN, it is great exercise, saves on gasoline (quickly becoming a precious commodity), saves money, Gives a fresh perspective, is intentional and deliberate (meaning it forces you to see and experience a city, make that community in much more organic way. It saves on pollution and is "green". In some instances, it is faster than waiting around in traffic.

Most cities are bicycle friendly with well marked paths for bicycle commuters. Portland Oregon, for instance not only encourages bicycling but they make it easy for their commuters to do it, with biker friendly laws, rights of way and even "On Street Parking" for bikers.

Some pre-cautions for your safety.

Wear a helmet.....hat may seem obvious, however most cities do not have laws requiring the use of helmets and the dangers of a bicycle accident far outweigh not wearing them.

Keep your bicylce "tuned-up".

Many accidents occur because of poorly maintained equipment.

Know the local laws

Bicycles share the road with pedestrians, cars, trucks, vans, etc. and must use caution when traveling. In most cases the laws are designed to protect the commuter bicyclist. Follow the rules of the road. Take heed of the traffic signals. When the traffic stops, stop with them. Red lights are for cyclists too. Not heeding these laws can be very dangerous.

Go with the flow of traffic and stay on designated bicycle lanes. Simple enough!

Understand the signals.

Right and left hand turns have their own signals. Learn them and make sure your children know them also. If you are going to ride at night, invest in a light kit assembly. Many bicycle outfitters have the proper equipment and it is easy to install. Just as it is crucial for cars and trucks to warn others on the road what their intentions are before making a turn, it is even more critical for a cyclist.

The bottom line

Bicycling is tons of fun! Enjoy it and be safe. I promise it will enhance your experience in your city or community.

Thanks for stopping by

To your success

Until next time my friends,

A Few Quiet Days At Wades Point Inn, St. Michaels, MD (LOCALISM FEATURED)

My wife and I had the pleasure of taking a short vacation at a wonderful Bed and Breakfast in St. Michaels, MD. The name of this treasure is Wades Point Inn. The mini-vacation was a gift from our kids last Christmas and one that we really enjoyed. I'll have to remind them that Christmas is only a couple of months away :)

Not to be political but Vice President Cheney and previous Defense Secretary Rumsfeld both own houses in St. Michaels.

Just a few minutes from downtown St. Michaels you'll find the welcoming sign greeting you to a restful stay. Turn in and enjoy the stay.

No tv or phone in the rooms. Just peace and quiet.

Wades Point Inn

At the end of a long driveway you'll find the main house welcoming you. Sweeping lawn in front with a huge waterfront access on the Miles River in back. Yes, that's a screened porch where guests can sit and chat in the cool evening breeze. There are guest rooms in the main house as well as another guest building to the left just out of view. We were greeted at the main house by the owner's beagle who hardy lifted her head.

Main House

Here's another view of the main house. Wonderful 19th century architecture.

Main House 2

Can't you just see yourself just sitting here and rocking after a hard day of doing nothing? If only there was a bar with Mint Juleps I might never leave.

Rocking Chairs

Laying in the hammock I didn't even think of real estate once.  Was that bad?

Hammock

I don't know about you but I could watch a sunset like that every day and never get bored.

Sunset

It just doesn't get any better than this.

Reading a book

This is the "breakfast room" of the Wades Point Inn Bed and Breakfast. Not exactly the view from Denny's now is it? Breakfast included fruit salad, cereal, eggs and a view to die for.

Breakfast Room

What a shoreline. This was taken from the guest house we stayed in and is only about half the shoreline of the property.

Until next year at the Wades Point Inn...keep my chair warm.

ACTIVE-RAIN SUCCESS STORY COMES FROM CONTEST ENTRY--Great things happen here!

I wanted to start my Saturday morning off on a positive note, with a positive post, by sharing my "latest" Active-Rain success story. I don't usually write about them, but I thought I would today, if for no other reason except, to encourage Rainers who may not have had one (success story). YET.

Back in March (2008), our own MELISSA GRANT who was then heading up the BLAST FROM THE PAST Group, challenged us to a contest about history. We were to write a post about something historic in our area.  Since I love exploring the past of a town, any town, and I know loads about my area, I decided I'd give the contest a shot. Though Lake Arrowhead is oozing with history, I decided I didn't my entry to be just fluff-stuff. I chose an interesting piece of our past which evolved an early 1900's bad boy. My contest post was titled LAKE ARROWHEAD'S BRACKEN FERN MANOR & Connection to Mobster, Bugsy Siegal.

There were MANY well-written, interesting contest entries, so I wasn't expecting to win. And then, surprisingly, I did.... Well, I came in third, I think (can't recall). That alone was super exciting to me, as I am one of those folks who NEVER wins anything!

...BUT my big success story regarding this contest entry came a month ago when I received a call from a soon-to-be client asking to see property. Great! I set up an appointment that met her schedule. On our first meeting, as we were driving around the lake, I asked (FINALLY), "How did you find me?"

"From your article on the Bugsy Siegal place," she said. "I really enjoyed it!"

WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF NEGOTIATING AN OFFER FOR A CABIN SHE FEEL IN LOVE WITH.

The moral of this story is two-fold: 1. You never know when you'll meet your next client, or how.  2. Keep posting (writing) "good content" here on Active Rain. IT WORKS!

Our first listing from Active Rain !

We received a phone call from a seller a few days ago who had a condo to sell in Queen Village.  The person had done their online research and found us !!  We met with the folks yesterday, gave our presentation and we had a client !  See Queen Village gem .   The two items they were impressed the most with was:

Grow your web presence

1.  Our Site

2.  Our Blog

Stephanie and I have put a lot of time and investment in our site - The Somers Team.  And recently our blog - The Philadelphia Real Estate Blog.

It is a direct result that from the active rain blog that has helped our site go higher and higher in Google - we are coming up on some searches on p. 1, others p. 2 and p.3 and so forth.  It is amazing what Active Rain has done for us in a short period of time.

What is even better is that we love blogging - it is fun, interactive and a release for us.  I would continue to do it just for that, but the benefits end up being much more as consumers are finding us on the web and sellers are interested in having their listings get the maximum internet exposure possible - and as of right now, that is through us in our Philadelphia area !

In this whacky real estate market, there is such a huge opportunity to grow your web presence and in turn, expand and grow your market share in your respective area !

Thank you Active Rain and thank you Active Rain members ! We look foward to sharing additional success stories as we believe there will be plenty more !  We have read countless success stories from others so are excited to share our first one !

Feel free to subscribe to our blog to stay up to date with our latest posts and information on the Philadelphia Real Estate Market.  You can also sign up to receive the Philadelphia Real Estate Blog via email.

A Saturday Ritual In Old Town Temecula (LOCALISM FEATURED)

veggies

Without fail, if we're in town, Laura and I head to Old Town Temecula every Saturday for the Farmers Market. I mistakenly thought it was just a summer event. Much to my delight I have found out it happens year 'round. Our last visit we brought home fresh baked bread, passionfruit, eggplant, peaches, kettle corn and more. I love the smells and colors and really enjoy watching people interact with the vendors and with each other. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow morning!

Othello-Quintette Tunnels - Hope - B.C. - Journey Through the Old Kettle Valley Railway Tunnels (LOCALISM FEATURED)

Set in the THE COQUIHALLA CANYON PROVINCIAL PARK  minutes from the town of Hope  are what could be one of B.C.'s best kept seccrets. Here I've lived in Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley for the past eight years and NEVER I mean never have I seen the Othello Tunnels  - a series of abandoned railway tunnels and bridges that will take your breath away!

As you take the windy logging rode up to the Park a large parking lot awaits you (pay parking)...From there its a 10 minutes walk along a beautifully treed gravel path.....leaves starting to turn into their autumn wonder....by your side is the babbling rush of the Coquihalla River...It's an exhilerating walk.....knowing that soon...around the corner you'll face your first tunnel....

The hike is pretty easy.  There's a bit of an uphill climb to get to the tunnels, but its short.  Once you get to the former railroad tracks its pretty easy going.  The tunnels themselves don't take long to hike... an hour at most. But the hike is spectacular!

Designed by engineer Andrew McCulloch, the tunnels were built from 1911 to 1916 to complete the Kettle Valley Railway.  Cost of  building the railway was approx. 136,000 per mile - 5x the cost of normal railway construction at the time - 13 tunnels - and 43 Bridges 22 million board feet of lumber  and 56 tons of steel.

The history of the tunnels is interesting... an architectural marvel in that dynamite had to be set into the mountain rock via long ladders from the top of the mountain, and those lighting the dynamite had only seconds to scamper back up the ladder to the top without being blown up. Yet all the caves form a uniform arch.

The biggest challenge was finding a way to get through the Coquihalla gorge where the river had cut a 300,000 gorge where the river had cut a 300 foot deep channel in a wall of solid granite.

"Rough quarries, rocks and hills whose heads touch heavens"....William Shakespeare

Unfortunately after it was completed, there was washout after washout with rockslides plaguing the railway continuously.  Eventually the Line was to close in 1959.

The tunnels are huge, exciting and eerie at the same time, and a little flashlight definitely comes in handy.  Everytime you step out of a tunnel theres a wooden bridge with incredible views.

The Coquihalla flows freely through the gorge amidst the granite backdrop ...that'll take your breath away!

*The tunnels are located less than two hours from Vancouver, close to Hell's Gate, Minter Gardens, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Anne Arundel County Golf Course Communities (LOCALISM FEATURED)

Included in Your Online Relocation Package for Anne Arundel County, Maryland - Home of Fort George G. Meade, NSA, Northrop Grumman, BWI, and the U.S. Naval Academy.

If you're a golfer, chances are good that living near a golf course is a priority for you.  I know because that describes my family!

There's no shortage of golf courses in the D.C. - Baltimore area, that's for sure!  In Anne Arundel County alone there are thirteen, including three on military installations (Fort Meade and the U.S. Naval Academy).  But which are located in a "golf course community" where you and your family could walk or bike to the golf course?

To answer that question for you, I compiled this list of Anne Arundel County golf courses along with addresses and links to their websites.  A brief description of each golf course is based on data from golfable.com and information about housing was compiled from listings in the Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. (MRIS), our regional MLS.  Courses I consider to be located in "golf course communities" are marked with an asterisk (*).

USNA Golf CourseANNAPOLIS AREA -

1.  * Bay Hills Golf Club - 545 Bay Hills Dr, Arnold, MD 21012

This Par-70 course was built on rolling hills that wind throughout the Bay Hills community. Greens are bent grass and the fairways are zoysia.  Memberships available but not required.

Neighboring Homes in the Bay Hills subdivision line the fairways of Bay Hills Golf Club.   Homes range from about $315,000 to $550,000, including detached homes and townhomes.   Chances are good that your children can walk or bike to Bay Hills Golf Club from home.

2.  Eisenhower Golf Course- 1576 Generals Hwy., Crownsville, MD 21032

This Par 71 course has sand bunkers scattered throughout the design and a water hazard that comes into play on hole #7. The Bermuda-grass fairways are narrow with most being tree lined. This terrain is very hilly, so you can expect a few uneven lies. The Bermuda-grass greens are small, undulating, sloped, and generally fast.  Access limited to authorized personnel.

The signature hole is #18, a 480-yard, par 5, providing some of the most breathtaking scenery the course has to offer. Membership required.

Neighboring homes in the Old South Country Club community are few, and their prices are usually over a million dollars.  There are six on the market at this time ranging from $987,500 to $1,395,000.

Get Yer Oysters, Cheese and Peanuts at Land Park's Farmers Market (LOCALISM FEATURED)

September 14, 2008, LAND PARK, SACRAMENTO . . . All I wanted to do was lie in bed and read the Sunday paper, but my husband had other ideas. Hey, it's not what you think. He wanted me to get up, get dressed and walk down to the Land Park Farmer's Market. "Think of all the fresh produce we can sample," he said. I didn't put down the paper. "Think of spending some quality time with your husband." Yawn. Stretch. Then he pulled out the the big guns: "Think about the blog you could write."

I was out of bed and dressed faster than you could say, "Are you bringing your camera?"

We walked up Muir Way, hung a left at Broadway and headed north down 8th Street to the tents, cars and people -- my goodness, there were a lot of people -- under what the helicopter guy on the radio used to call the "W / X Freeway," but today is known as Business 80.

Darting through the parked cars, we came upon a truck sporting two bumper stickers, side by side. They were both of the crossed-ribbon logo variety. One read: "Support Our Troops," and the other: "Support Lap Dances." I suppose there's a message there, but I don't know what it is.

We were on a hunt for the Watanabe Farms booth to buy heirloom and plum tomatoes. Watanabe Farms sells tomatoes to The Kitchen, Ella's and The Firehouse, among other notable Sacramento restaurants, and let me tell you, those tomatoes alone are worth the trip.

Watanabe Farms Owners and Employees

We met Ann (she's on the right) and several other Watanabes. When Ann delivers tomatoes to The Kitchen, she and her employees are always offered dinner. Ann's daughter-in-law said her friends can't understand why in the world anybody would turn down a free dinner at The Kitchen, but then, they aren't enjoying Ann's home-cooked meals.

What does she make?  Poke. It's a dish with seaweed, sashimi tuna over sushi seasoned rice (made with vinegar). Mostly every night, the Watanabes enjoy a tomato dish. Here is one of Ann's recipes:  slice bread, spread with garlic and butter, then toast in the oven. Top with tomatos, avocados, mayonnaise and sliced onion.

Laurelle Pankey, Spring Hill Cheese

Next stop was the Spring Hill Cheese booth. Spring Hill is based in Petaluma, but the owners quickly grew tired of getting up at 4 AM and driving two hours to Sacramento, so they hired a sales team from Sacramento to help out. Laurelle Pankey (above) supplied us with generous taste portions of jack cheese, both in a very mild flavor and smoked.

I think smoked is good in small quantities, but the mild jack melted in my mouth. Smooth and creamy. Our cats would really love this cheese. Every morning, my husband makes toast, tops it with sliced cheese and melts the concoction for a few minutes in the microwave. The cats sit on the floor and scream for treats, which my husband obliges and encourages by dropping small bits of cheese on the floor. All except one turn up their noses at the smoked variety. Oh, well, more cheese for me.

You can buy almost anything organic and deliciously edible at the Farmer's Market. From fresh produce such as lettuce, eggplant, beansprouts, strawberries, corn, jalapenos, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, sage, cilantro (I love the scent of cilantro -- somebody should bottle that as a perfume),  to peanuts, fish (wild, line-caught salmon), beef, honey and even plants and flowers.

Fresh oysters cost $110 for 100 large oysters or $9 per dozen; smaller oysters are much cheaper. If you visit toward the end of the day, you can get even better bargains. But be forewarned, some items sell out fast, so if you wait until 9:30, you might find that what you want is no longer available.

People can donate their used books the 1st Saturday of each month at the Book Resort on 225 N. Marshall Street in Lancaster from 10 A.M to 1 P.M. You can also donate books Monday and Wednesday from 10 A.M to 12 P.M and Sundays from 2 P.M TO 4 P.M.

Last year's show closed with a record breaking 3 day sale bringing in 73,834$. That was 20,000$ more than the year before. We can safely assume that more books will be available this year for consumption.
